Darling Olives

Darling Olives is located just 3 km out of Darling towards Yzerfontein, nestled amidst vineyards, grazing cattle and olive groves.

Our 70 hectares of olives are all dry land and grown on the Alexanderfontein Estate. They get processed within 24 hours of being hand picked, resulting in a superior product.

At the tasting room we offer an culinary adventure into what Darling Olives is all about. You will get to experience our olives, olive oils, Labneh cheese, jams, marmalade and olive pastes etc, together with our Sauvignon Blanc. For desert you can sample our olive chocolate together with our red wine. Both the Sauvignon Blanc and red wine are sold exclusively on the Alexanderfontein Estate. During the winter months we always have a fire burning in our tasting rooms to shake off the cold while enjoying an informative tasting.

Experience a traditional approach to olives on a working farm where cattle are still herded by horse and a flock of sheep might cross your path. Darling Olives is a great place to start your education about how olives are grown, pressed and cured.

Darling Sweet

Watch the Darling Sweet team lovingly produce the most delectable old fashioned quality handcrafted toffee at their new premises.Darling Sweet came into existence in late 2013 when Hentie van der Merwe and Frits van Ryneveld decided to start a toffee company in their hometown Darling. The initial idea came from Frits who felt that the small Swartland town with its picturesque surrounds needs something sweet and that it should be the most delicious old-fashioned toffee, seeing as the production of its main ingredient – good quality butter – has been associated with Darling for generations.

The idea didn’t take long to inspire Hentie – artist, lecturer and trained chef – to start journeying into the centuries old art of toffee-making in developing their unique toffee flavours:

  • Tannie Evita’s Classic Toffee (money is donated to the
  • Honey & Salt Toffee
  • Red Wine & Chocolate Toffee
  • Ormonde Wines Toffee
  • Orange & Pomegranate
  • Liquorice Toffee
  • Sour Fig Toffee

Their toffees are preservative free – and all their reductions they make themselves, nothing synthetic – creating a real old fashioned butter toffee – and probably one of the healthiest toffees on the market!

Darling Sweet also bottles and sells raw veld flower honey from the cape coastal region.

They are also very proud about the fact that their packaging is made from recycled paper, and that their toffee wrappers are biodegradable.

The Darling Sweet kitchen is located in the beautiful original General Dealer building of Darling – where members of the public can view the Darling Sweet production line.

The entire manufacturing process is done by hand – from assembling the ingredients to the final packaging of the product.

The focus on manual production is very much part of Frits and Hentie’s focus on job creation and skills and career development within the Darling community.

I Love Yzers

I Love Yzer is an event, publishing, marketing and brand management company established in 2013. Our aim is to promote Yzerfontein, Darling & the West Coast as a tourism destination to support our local events and businesses.

We’ve organised 53 events to date including markets, shows and ad hoc events to establish a tourism footprint in our area. Through the markets we support our local producers and crafters by providing them the opportunity to sell their products to locals and visitors, growing their customer base. Our main seasonal markets are:

Groote Post Country Market On the last Sunday of the month at Groote Post Vineyards in Darling from August – April. Together with their PR company we are able to attract a variety of visitors that has never been to our area and expose them to what Darling and Yzerfontein has to offer.

I Love Weskus Market We selected key seasonal market dates during the year and it is held at Vygevallei Farmstall on the R27.

I Love Yzer Feesmark The market that established our business! Our annual market takes place on the Saturday prior to Christmas Day at the Delarey Farm in Yzerfontein. The farm is situated on the R315, a stone’s throw away from the Yzerfontein entrance. We provide entertainment, kids activities, local crafters and the best food on the West Coast! With more than 3000 visitors attending our market in 2014, it is not a day to be missed!

Since 2013 we have hosted well known artists such as Koos Kombuis, Lollos, Valiant Swart, Piet Botha, Chris Chameleon and The Parlotones. The support from the community has been amazing and all the shows has been sold out.

In 2013 we launched the I Love Yzer Darling magazine as a medium to promote our local talent, events and all things West Coast. Mostly local contributors supply content and anyone is welcome to submit articles. The quarterly publication is a must-have for all the visitors in our area. We also publish three electronic newsletters in Yzerfontein & two in Darling per week in partnership with BFound. By signing up for the newsletters you can receive up-to-date news, info and specials from our local restaurants and businesses and plan your stay accordingly.
